Footballer Benjamin Mendy has sold his replica of the 2018 World Cup trophy, which he won with France in Russia, for approximately 54,000 euros at an auction organized by the American house Goldin.
The former French international, currently playing for Polish club Pogon Szczecin, put the World Cup trophy up for sale at the Global Football Auction Part 2, an event specializing in collectible sports memorabilia. The auction concluded on July 25th.
The item was described as damaged, featuring a crack at the base and slight signs of wear. Despite this, it fetched around 54,000 euros. The buyer received, along with the trophy, a certificate of authenticity signed by the player himself, who has had stints at clubs such as Marseille, Monaco, and Manchester City.
It's worth noting that Benjamin Mendy, who recently renewed his contract for another year in Poland, faced ten accusations of rape and attempted rape from seven women in 2021. The full-back, who earned 10 caps for France, was acquitted of all charges between January and July 2023, having been sidelined from playing during that period.
