Why singer needs to release new music soon
Wizkid owes us. He owes Nigeria, owes the fans, and owes everyone who has at one showed him support.
He’s indebted to us, he needs to make us happy, and we are slowly disbelieving all the promises he has made to us. The promises of good music.
Last year we all got buttered and primed for new music from the Starboy singer. He had promised everyone an album drop in September 2015. Prior to that, The Starboy CEO has taken fans on a long musical journey, with collaborations, and announcements in 2015 creating anticipation for the LP. Everyone was ready. Nigeria was ready. I was ready. Anticipations were fever pitch, and all looked set for a grand release.
But that was not to be. Wizkid broke many hearts.
Wizkid was one of the many superstars present when Nigerian music Legend, 2face Idibia celebrated his 40th birthday party at an All-star tribute concert tagged #Fortyfied which held at Eko Hotel. The experience had a profound impact on the singer, convincing him to postpone his album release, earlier scheduled to drop this month till ‘sometime next year’.
Everyone was distraught, with many reading between the lines and coming up with analysis that portrayed Wizkid as a singer with no plan, and no aim. Even though he did promise an EP in October with 10 songs and 10 videos, few took him seriously.
Except a select few, who in our hearts prayed for the singer to keep his word and not let his fans down one more time. But alas, October became November, and December came calling. The dream of the EP has faded, with just a paltry short song and video ‘Baba nla’ thrown in to keep people less thirsty.
January came and projections for the New Year had Wizkid and his classmate, Davido at the top of every list. They were projected to make a killing in the first half, with hit singles, deal and bodies of work. While Davido has been rolling in bed with Sony Music, Wizkid has been on concerts abroad, while fans stay back and pray for his return. It hasn’t also helped that there has been no certified hit song in 2016. Not one has claimed the airwaves.
It’s the month of March, and Wizkid has revealed no plans to get the songs coming. From feedback on social media and sources close to him, he is still dealing with performance commitments, and travelling around the country to get his show money coming in. But he needs the songs to come out.
Davido’s deal with Sony Music might have delayed his album for a considerable amount of time, but that is not guaranteed. Wizkid needs another strong year with a body of work to still maintain his choke hold at the top of his game. We exist in perilous times, where attention span is short, and there is a content overflow in the market. Artistes need to work extra hard and get more materials out to get a good chance to stay relevant. The threat of descending into obscurity is still far from Wizkid, but you never know. The music industry is too heated right now.
Wizkid needs to release more music. For his fans, and ultimately, for himself.
