It’s been a very interesting year for Wizkid. Without releasing an album or any original singles in 2016, he has successfully maintained a position at the top.
On Sunday, November 6, 2016, Wizkid did it again and had the whole country talking about him. In one night, the star received three awards - he won Best African Act and Worldwide Act at the 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards. That same night at the 2016 All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) which held at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, he won Best Artiste of the Year.
In October he received Best African Act at the MOBO awards and Best Male Artist and Best African Artist of the year at the MTV Africa Music Awards.
Seeing how the Starboy has swept the big awards this eason, it’s obvious there are several lessons that all artistes can learn from Wiz.
1. Keep working on your gift
Wizkid’s gift speaks for itself. There’s no denying he’s a genius. From speaking to close associates of the singer, they’ve shared that Wizkid is hard working and never stops recording. Even when he’s travelling for tours, he stays recording and even sets up a home studio in his hotel room.
Wizkid is not average, he strives for perfection by working hard.
2. Collaborate
2016 alone has seen Wizkid staying relevant in the game and this has been thanks not just to his previous releases and star power but also thanks to his features and collaborations.
At the 2016 MAMA, besides winning Best Male Artist and African Artist of the year, Wizkid also went ahead to win Best Collaboration for his feature in DJ Maphorisa's 'Soweto Baby'.
His feature on Drake’s ‘ One dance’ saw the Starboy breaking records with the song being one of the most streamed tunes on Spotify and even charting at number one on the Billboard 100 chart.
3. Work with other producers
Wizkid doesn’t just stick to one producers. Yes there are the usual suspects like Sarz and Legendury Beatz he’s known to work closely with, but this doesn’t stop him from working with other producers
4. Surround yourself with creative people
Wiz is always surrounded by a tribe of creatives made up of musicians, songwriters, instrumentalists and producers.
Yes you have big dreams and ideas but for this to come to reality, you need to surround yourself with positivity, and people who have the same mindset as you do. Be open to new experiences.
5. Drown out the noise
Everyone wants to know what Wizkid is up to - who is he hanging out with? Is he dating Justin Skye? How many baby mamas does he have?
For as much positive buzz you might receive, there’ll always be rumours and lies being spread. It’s all a distraction.
Pay attention to the bigger picture.
