The pursuit of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo went down to the wire, with the Greek phenom ultimately landing with the Miami Heat. The Boston Celtics were reportedly very close to acquiring him, but the deal fell through at the last moment.
According to Shams Charania, negotiations broke down because Boston refused to include their young players in the trade package with the Milwaukee Bucks.
To secure the "Greek Freak," the Celtics reportedly offered a package centered around 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and two unprotected first-round draft picks.
However, Milwaukee insisted on including Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman, and additional assets in the deal. The Celtics, however, declined to meet this demand.
Ultimately, the Heat acquired Giannis by offering Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, three first-round picks, one pick swap, and one second-round pick.
Jaylen Brown is a cornerstone player for the Celtics. His role became even more crucial when Jayson Tatum missed most of the 2025-26 season due to injury. Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, helping Boston secure the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
Spanish guard Hugo Gonzalez showed significant defensive potential in his rookie season, averaging 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 73 games. Baylor Scheierman also contributed with solid perimeter shooting, hitting 39.9% of his attempts from beyond the arc. In 77 games, he averaged 5.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.
Milwaukee ultimately preferred the Miami Heat's offer, as the inclusion of multiple young players facilitates a full-scale team rebuild. With Jaylen Brown turning 30 this October, the Bucks would have been under pressure to immediately build a competitive roster around him.
In contrast, the oldest player in the Heat's package is 26-year-old Tyler Herro. This timeline provides Milwaukee with the flexibility to develop their new assets as they approach their prime years.
