Why Has a Football Giant Fallen? 2026 World Cup Failure Reveals Shocking Truth

According to Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro, the repeated failures of the German national football team at the World Cup are a consequence of structural, political, and cultural issues within German society.

Germany has historically dominated the football world, clinching the World Cup four times. However, their 2026 campaign saw them crash out in the Round of 16, following group stage exits in the two preceding tournaments.

Fernando Carro, who has led Bayer since 2018 and oversaw Leverkusen's historic first Bundesliga title in 2024, highlighted the urgent need for greater investment in youth football. "Germany still boasts exceptional individual talent, but it's clear that fewer new players are reaching the top level," the 61-year-old executive warned.

According to Carro, there's a critical need to better integrate the school system with sports and to develop modern infrastructure. Furthermore, these projects are often hampered by bureaucracy and protracted decision-making. Carro cited Bayer Leverkusen's nearly decade-long wait for approval to build a new training center, despite the project already being scaled down.

"This is just one example of broader issues in Germany," he added. The Spanish-born executive also praised the success of European nations that advanced further in the tournament. Spain has reached the final, while France and England made it to the semi-finals. Carro attributes this to their significant ambition, perseverance, and team strength. "These countries have systematically invested in infrastructure, academies, and the development of coaches and players," he emphasized.

Following the 2026 World Cup, Julian Nagelsmann departed as Germany's national team coach, with Jürgen Klopp expected to take his place soon. However, Carro cautioned that even a renowned figure like Klopp cannot single-handedly resolve the deep-seated, structural problems.

"Jürgen Klopp has achieved a great deal and deserves respect, but he alone cannot change the fundamental conditions. The keys are a strong and modern youth development concept, quality infrastructure, clear performance principles, and a willingness to adapt," concluded the Bayer Leverkusen chief.
