Pascal Wehrlein has taken the lead in the Formula E championship standings after winning the first of two races in London, which conclude the 2025/26 season of the all-electric series.
The Porsche driver started from pole position and led virtually from start to finish over the 39-lap distance. In the opening phase, he was aided by his teammate Nico Müller, who held back the pack about two seconds behind Wehrlein.
Subsequently, luck also favored Wehrlein, who stayed out on track a little longer before his pit stop. The German had the opportunity to pit under a full course yellow following Lucas di Grassi's incident at Turn 9.
Besides Wehrlein, Dan Ticktum, Antonio Félix da Costa, Jake Dennis, Sébastien Buemi, Edoardo Mortara, and Taylor Barnard also benefited from this neutralization. All of them rejoined the track ahead of the drivers who had pitted earlier, occupying the top seven positions.
By the finish, Dennis managed to advance two places, overtaking Da Costa and Ticktum consecutively at the start of laps 29 and 30, capitalizing on having conserved more energy earlier. However, the champion from two years ago couldn't catch Wehrlein, who secured a comfortable 5.7-second victory.
Da Costa finished third behind Wehrlein and Dennis, having managed to overtake Ticktum at the start of lap 35. Ticktum then tried to reclaim third place at the end of the next lap, but this cost him a total of three positions as he was overtaken by Buemi, Mortara, and Barnard within a few corners.
Thus, Buemi finished fourth, ahead of Barnard, Ticktum, Mortara (who was penalized after the finish), Mitch Evans, Nick Cassidy, and reigning champion Oliver Rowland, who completed the points-scoring positions in the first London race. With his tenth-place finish today, Rowland lost his chance to defend his title, as he trails leader Wehrlein by more than 29 points before tomorrow's final race.
Before the final race, Wehrlein leads with 169 points, holding a 5-point advantage over Dennis, while Evans is third, 21 points adrift. These are the only three drivers with a mathematical chance to contend for the title in Formula E's 12th season. If Wehrlein or Dennis win, Formula E will have only its second two-time champion after Jean-Éric Vergne, who won titles in 2017/18 and 2018/19.
Tomorrow's race in London starts at 5:05 PM Bulgarian time, will consist of 35 laps, and will not include pit stops.
