Vildoza's Change of Heart a Blessing in Disguise

17:29 - 19 September 2026
Luka Vildoza was a hot topic among Serbian basketball fans this summer due to a statement he made, perhaps clumsily or in an attempt to endear himself to his former club's supporters. However, it appears he's quickly making one side forget those words.

Partizan's basketball team concluded their participation in the "Pavlos Giannakopoulos" tournament with an even record, suffering a last-second three-pointer defeat to PAOK before securing a victory against Bourg.

In both matchups, the black-and-whites displayed a solid, often fluid offensive game, showcasing glimpses of organized attacks alongside a considerable degree of individual freedom in decision-making, a hallmark of coach Đoan Penjaroja's philosophy. It's clear that the Spanish coach emphasizes two key principles: defined roles for each player and the liberty for players to make on-court decisions, a strategy he has successfully implemented with this squad.

Furthermore, in both games, Luka Vildoza demonstrated his ability to fulfill the coach's expectations, adapting seamlessly to his assigned role and integrating well with his new teammates.

His scoring prowess was more evident in the second game, though he distributed the ball less. In contrast, the first half of the initial match highlighted his playmaking abilities, particularly in his collaboration with Nikola Tanasković, where their synergy contributed significantly to Partizan's new frontcourt threat.

Returning to the Bourg game, the Argentinian finished with just two errors: one turnover and one missed free throw. He tallied 18 points, shooting 1/1 from two-point range, 3/3 from beyond the arc, and 5/6 from the free-throw line. He focused more on individual offensive plays, capitalizing on his hot hand, and recorded only one assist. Despite it being a friendly match, he didn't hold back, grabbing three defensive rebounds.

Vildoza's playing style is set to alleviate the burden on the consistently effective Carlik Jones, whose heavy workload in previous setups often posed a significant challenge. Considering that Derek Willis is still finding his rhythm, Vildoza's continued performance at this level is already a positive sign for Partizan.

If he maintains this form and intensifies his play, the black-and-white faithful in Belgrade might quickly overlook his past comments about never joining their side. For Partizan, Vildoza could prove to be one of the most crucial pieces in assembling this season's puzzle, despite initially being brought in as a third option.
