Victor Wembanyama is undoubtedly poised to be one of the NBA's defining figures for at least the next decade. The Spurs' center continues to achieve remarkable feats, threatening to surpass milestones set by superstars like Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Following his Rookie of the Year award, a distinction shared with Jordan and LeBron, and having made two All-Star Game appearances, Wembanyama was also named to the All-NBA First Team in just his third season, mirroring Jordan and James. However, he led his team to the Finals significantly earlier than both legends—Jordan needed seven seasons, and LeBron four. Now, Wemby is set to reach another exclusive tier alongside Air Jordan and King James: his own signature basketball shoe line.
This development comes as Wembanyama has reportedly agreed to an extension with Nike, a contract he initially signed before entering the NBA. Among the new provisions is the launch of a signature sneaker, according to league and industry sources cited by The Athletic.
The 22-year-old Frenchman thus joins an elite group of NBA players with Nike signature shoes. This honor began with Michael Jordan, revolutionizing the athletic footwear industry, and has more recently continued with LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Devin Booker, Ja Morant, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
The news of the agreement was first reported by ESPN, with sources requesting anonymity as a formal announcement has yet to be made. Nike, for its part, issued a statement to The Athletic, expressing pride in continuing to support the young player's journey.
"As one of the world's most unique and influential athletes, Victor is a generational talent who continues to inspire the next generation of sport. We are excited about everything we've built together and look forward to more victories in the future," the statement read.
Wembanyama was the first unanimous winner of the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award and finished third in MVP voting last season. Throughout the playoffs, his image was prominently featured by the brand in social media campaigns.
Until now, Wembanyama has primarily worn shoes from Nike's G.T. series, which feature a small alien logo first revealed in 2022 when he became a Nike athlete, a year before being drafted by the Spurs. While there has been a special edition of the G.T. series with his name, these will be his first official signature shoes.
Last Friday, Nike and Wembanyama unveiled a new logo via a social media video. The new, more subtle symbol stylizes a "V" over a "W," creating the image of an alien in the negative space. The promotional video shows a supernova transforming into a pulsar, revealing the "VW" logo. According to the brand, the choice symbolizes Wembanyama as the NBA's fastest-rising star, associating the pulsar with early investigations into the phenomenon that led scientists to question if the signals were from extraterrestrial life.
This Nike deal comes just weeks after Wembanyama signed a five-year, $252 million contract extension with the Spurs, keeping him in San Antonio until the 2031-32 season. The Frenchman opted out of a potential $301 million supermax contract, explaining his decision to The Athletic: "The reality of today's NBA is that, often, teams' potential isn't realized because of money. I just want to make sure that's never our case."
