Anichebe whose contract with Beijing Enterprises of China has expired, emerged as a potential transfer target for English Championship outfit Bolton.
The Sunderland Echo report that, Bolton are set to move for the Nigerian to replace forward Gary Madine who left for Cardiff City in the winter transfer window.
Anichebe is a free agent after the expiration of his contract and will be a suitable short term replacement for Bolton.
The 29-year-old made a total of 11 appearances for the Super Eagles and was part of the Under 23 football team that won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games.
If Anichebe completes the move to Bolton he will join compatriot Sammy Ameobi where Former Super Eagles captain Jay Jay Okocha.
Anichebe has played for English sides, Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland before he moved to play for Chinese outfit Beijing Enterprises.
