The bantamweight clash between Umar Nurmagomedov and Song Yadong is set to headline the upcoming UFC Fight Night in Shanghai, China, scheduled for August 29th.
This main event comes after Nurmagomedov was initially slated to fight at UFC Abu Dhabi in July. However, his opponent, David Martinez, was forced to withdraw due to injury. UFC sought a replacement, but ultimately decided to pull Nurmagomedov from that card and instead pit him against Song, with their bout now topping the Shanghai event.
Nurmagomedov boasts a professional record of 20 wins and 1 loss, with his sole defeat coming via decision against former bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili.
As for Song, he gets an opportunity to climb the divisional ranks after recently submitting former UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC Macau in May. In his last four fights, Song holds a 2-2 record, with victories over Figueiredo and Henry Cejudo, and losses to Sean O'Malley and Petr Yan.
The showdown between Nurmagomedov and Song positions the winner favorably for a potential bantamweight title shot in the near future.
With the main event for UFC Shanghai now confirmed, the organization is expected to announce more bouts in the coming weeks.
