Kris Padilla is hoping to reclaim a victory from UFC 327. Padilla's management team confirmed to mmafighting.com that the fighter has filed an official appeal with the Florida Athletic Commission following his bout with Markel Medeiros on Saturday in Miami.
Initially, Padilla was declared the winner by split decision – two scorecards of 29-27 and one of 28-28. However, about an hour later, it became clear that two of the judges had actually scored the fight 28-28, changing the outcome from a win to a draw.
Padilla also shared his perspective on the situation in an exclusive statement to MMA Fighting.
"I believe I won this fight decisively according to the scoring criteria – based on damage inflicted, control, and overall impact," Padilla wrote. "It's hard for me to accept that the fight was even close on the judges' scorecards, especially considering my performance and the point deduction against my opponent."
The result was perplexing, as the vast majority of observers believed Padilla had won the fight convincingly. Furthermore, Medeiros had a point deducted in the third round for multiple eye pokes. All 14 media members cageside scored the fight for Padilla, with more than half giving a 30-26 score in favor of the fighter affectionately known as "Taco."
At present, it is unclear whether the error was made by announcer Bruce Buffer when reading the scorecards and announcing the result, or if Buffer was provided with incorrect information by the judges and commission. The appeal is currently under review, with a decision expected to be announced next week.
