Tuchel: England's Problem Lies in Mindset

England manager Thomas Tuchel believes the nation's football DNA needs a fundamental shift to consistently win major international tournaments. The German tactician affirmed his 100 percent commitment to the role and expressed his desire to remain at the helm.

England suffered a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals, despite holding a 1-0 lead until the 85th minute. British media largely attributed the loss to Tuchel's tactical decisions in the final 30 minutes, during which Argentina dominated proceedings. This marks the third time in eight years that England has lost a crucial knockout match after scoring the opening goal. Similar scenarios unfolded in the 2018 World Cup semi-final, where the Three Lions fell 2-1 to Croatia after extra time, and in the Euro 2021 final at Wembley, where they squandered a 1-1 draw against Italy, ultimately losing on penalties.

"If we can change the mindset, we must do it. But in footballing terms, I'm not sure it's that simple. After we scored, the initiative shifted to Argentina; they controlled possession, and the chances we were creating earlier completely vanished. We became too passive. I tried to counteract this by bringing on a fifth defender to close any potential gaps in our defense. We needed to regain possession because without it, we couldn't dictate play," the German explained.

"The fact that we can't control the ball in the same way teams like Spain, Argentina, and Brazil do is a significant problem for us. The biggest area for development lies in our play with the ball and maintaining possession. I believe we still have much to achieve to reach our ultimate goal," the German specialist added.
