Enzo Fernández's future at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain, with Xabi Alonso refusing to guarantee the Argentine midfielder's stay at Chelsea should Manchester City make a move.
The Citizens, looking to bolster their midfield after Rodri's departure to Barcelona, have identified the former Benfica star as a primary target and are reportedly considering a bid before the transfer window closes, according to The Guardian. While Chelsea's unofficial deadline for £120 million (approximately €140 million) offers for the 25-year-old has passed, the possibility of his exit is still very much alive. The Argentine midfielder, it's worth noting, has never hidden his desire to leave the club.
When questioned in a press conference about the player's continuity, the Spanish coach remained tight-lipped. "Enzo is a Chelsea player. He's a top player. He's been training very well since he started with the team 10 days ago. He's very integrated, and we're happy with him. He's preparing for Monday," stated the former Real Madrid manager.
Chelsea kicks off their Premier League campaign on Monday night with an away fixture against Fulham, and the Argentine is expected to be included in the squad. However, Alonso sidestepped a direct answer when asked if the midfielder had communicated a desire to stay. "He's training very well. I see him with a good attitude. That's what we want. Everyone is doing their best to prepare for the start of the league."
Should Enzo's departure be confirmed, Chelsea will need to find a replacement. Alex Scott from Bournemouth and Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace are names that have been linked by the English press.
