In his inaugural press conference as Manchester City's head coach, Enzo Maresca acknowledged the daunting task of succeeding Pep Guardiola but expressed confidence in the club's structure for continued success. The former Chelsea coach also confirmed that Rodri would undergo surgery, ruling him out for the start of the season, and addressed Real Madrid's interest in the midfielder who shone at the 2026 World Cup.

The Italian, who took the helm of the English vice-champions last month, described the opportunity to follow Pep Guardiola as a "privilege," despite being acutely aware of the challenges such a role entails. Maresca referenced the difficulties faced by Sir Alex Ferguson's successors at Manchester United and Arsène Wenger's at Arsenal.

"First, I have to say it's a privilege because the club decided to bet on me. I've said many times that I consider Pep probably the best manager in the world over the last 20, 25 years," Maresca stated during his presentation.

The new Citizens' boss, stepping into the shoes of a figure who secured 17 major trophies in a decade, highlighted historical examples of managerial transitions at other clubs. "History shows that managers who stayed many years at the same club always faced some difficulties. After Sir Alex, after Arsène, but it's also a challenge to try and do things right immediately for this organization, for the fans, for everyone," he emphasized.

Despite the weight of the legacy, the 46-year-old coach believes Manchester City's stability and organization are key to success. "The organization is the main thing. This club, this organization, has had three managers in 17 years," he said, referring to Guardiola, Manuel Pellegrini, and Roberto Mancini. "This is not normal. It doesn't happen often. It's probably one of the things that makes me confident we can do a great job and continue what has been done since Roberto was here, then Manuel, and for 10 years, Pep."

Regarding the squad, the coach confirmed a significant absence for the start of the season. Rodri is scheduled for back surgery next Monday. When questioned about the future of the 30-year-old midfielder, a target for Real Madrid, Maresca downplayed the speculation. "Firstly, there's always speculation around big players. I'm not worried about that," he said, adding: "I think any coach would want Rodri because he's a top player. But now he's going to have surgery, I think on Monday. He needs a holiday, some rest. Then, he'll be back with us."

Maresca also addressed the situation of other players, admitting the possibility of departures. Jack Grealish, who returned from a loan spell at Everton, and James Trafford, the second-choice goalkeeper linked with Leeds, could leave the club. "At the moment, Jack is a Manchester City player. My duty is to try and coach the players who belong to the club. Then we'll see what happens," he commented on Grealish. Regarding Trafford, he added: "When the transfer window is open, anything can happen. We'll see. But, for now, he is one of our goalkeepers."
