Gustavo Varela, the 21-year-old forward sold by Benfica to Monza last summer for €2 million plus performance-related add-ons, is attracting serious interest from Europe's elite following a blistering start in Serie A. While the Lisbon giants did not include a buy-back option, they did secure a 20 per cent sell-on clause on future capital gains—a figure that could yield a massive windfall if Monza sanction a sale as early as the January transfer window.

The Portuguese striker is under contract with the Italian outfit until 2030 and has no release clause, but Monza are holding out for a fee in the region of €40m to €50m.

According to information gathered by A BOLA, several Premier League clubs have already registered their interest in the young attacker, with Arsenal among the first to make enquiries. Napoli are also keeping close tabs on the situation, while Barcelona have joined the hunt. None of Arsenal, Napoli, or Barcelona currently possess a centre-forward of Varela's profile, which could further drive up his market value ahead of the winter window.

Benfica retain a first-refusal option—allowing them to match any concrete offer—and continue to monitor proceedings, though they acknowledge that matching a bid capable of prising him away from Monza will be difficult. Even so, the Eagles stand to make a tidy profit: a 20 per cent cut of the capital gain on a €50m transfer would inject roughly €9.6m into the club's coffers.

Boasting 11 goals and an assist in 10 appearances for Monza, the Seixal academy product is fast establishing himself as one of European football's hottest commodities. Leading the Serie A scoring charts with nine strikes has only intensified the ongoing pursuit from top suitors.

His stock could rise even further should he earn a maiden senior call-up for Portugal, with Jorge Jesus set to announce his squad on Friday. In the meantime, Europe's heavyweights continue to circle, knowing that while 18th-placed Monza are reluctant to part ways with their prized asset, money talks...

Fresh faces Jesus could call up to the national team:
