Transfer Market: Aston Villa Misses Out on Benfica Target

Southampton Rejects €21 Million Plus Bonuses Bid for Harwood-Bellis

Southampton has reportedly rejected a bid from Aston Villa for their central defender, Taylor Harwood-Bellis. The offer, valued at €21 million plus add-ons, fell short of the Championship club's asking price, which is understood to be around €29 million. Harwood-Bellis was previously a target for Benfica, but the English club's demands led the Portuguese giants to sign Circati from Parma for €18 million, plus a potential €2 million in bonuses.

Aston Villa's interest in the center-back comes as the club looks to bolster its squad, anticipating the likely departure of England international Ezri Konsa to Arsenal. That transfer could reportedly exceed €58 million.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who earned his first senior England cap in a 2024 Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland, has been with Southampton since 2023, initially on loan. The defender came through Manchester City's academy but never featured for their first team. Interestingly, despite his City ties, he is married to Leah Keane, daughter of Manchester United legend Roy Keane.

It's worth recalling that Southampton finished last season in fourth place in the Championship before the 'Spygate' scandal led to their disqualification from the playoffs.

Since their Europa League triumph in May, Aston Villa has been active in the transfer market, primarily focusing on sales. The club has already offloaded key players such as Youri Tielemans, who moved to Manchester United, Morgan Rogers, transferred to Chelsea, and Lucas Digne, who signed for PSG. Additionally, goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and Ollie Watkins, the club's top scorer in the Premier League, have also been linked with potential exits.

Regarding new arrivals, Villa has already secured the signings of goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri this week. Other summer reinforcements include midfielder João Gomes, who joined from Wolverhampton, and forward Johan Manzambi, who arrived from Freiburg.
