British Deputy High Commissioner Dies In Lagos

The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Peter Leslie Carter, is dead.

Mr. Carter slumped and died yesterday, September 2, 2014 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The envoy came into the country aboard a United Airlines Flight and is believed to have suffered a heart attack.

According to reports, Carter began gasping for breath while getting off the plane after which he slumped and died.

The British High Commission, through its Head of Press & Public Affairs, Rob Fitzpatrick, has issued an official statement confirming the unfortunate incident.

It reads:

The British Deputy High Commission in Lagos is sad to confirm the sudden and unexpected death of Deputy High Commissioner Peter Carter. Peter joined HM Diplomatic Service in 1984 and was an experienced career diplomat.

He had previously served as Consul General in Milan and then as the British Ambassador to Estonia before becoming Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos in 2013 where he made an exceptional contribution to the UK’s relationship with Nigeria.

Peter will be sorely missed by his family, friends and colleagues.
