Japanese carmaker's seatbelt issue leads to 2.87 million vehicle recall

Toyota Motor Corporation has ordered the recall of 2.87 million vehicles worldwide.

Vanguard reports that an email from the company attributed the recall to possibility of a faulty rear seatbelt.

“There is a possibility that, in the event of a very severe frontal crash, the lap seatbelt belt webbing could contact a portion of the metal seat cushion frame and come off. If this occurs, the seatbelt may not properly restrain the occupant, which could increase the risk of injury.”

Hence, the recall, which give Toyota the opportunity to add resin covers to the metal seat cushion frames.

According to the automaker, this will prevent the seatbelt from being cut in a crash.
