Toto Wolff: We Should Have Won Every Race This Season!

Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Formula 1 team principal, stated that the team should have won all nine races this season. He reiterated his preference for a fast, albeit unreliable, car over a slow but dependable one. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that it's time to address the mechanical issues plaguing the Silver Arrows.

Mercedes has been a dominant force in the 2026 season so far, securing all nine pole positions in Grand Prix races, despite being outpaced by McLaren and Ferrari in several sprint qualifying sessions. However, the team has only converted these into seven victories out of nine.

Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton triumphed in Barcelona, where an electrical fault forced Kimi Antonelli to retire from second place. Three weeks prior, during the Canadian Grand Prix, a similar defect led to George Russell's retirement while leading the race.

In the most recent British Grand Prix, Antonelli's wheel guard failed, preventing him from mounting a serious challenge against the dominant leader, Charles Leclerc.

When asked if these reliability issues stemmed from pushing the limits and if Mercedes should "ease off a bit," Wolff responded: "I think we are an organization entirely focused on performance. Both on the chassis side and the engine side, we want to extract absolutely everything."

"I'd rather slightly dial back something that's truly good and fix some of the reliability issues, than be lagging in speed. So far, we've won six out of eight races? I've lost count. And I prefer that over being slow and reliable."
When it was pointed out that the statistic was seven wins from nine rounds, Wolff added: "It should have been nine out of nine."

Despite these setbacks, Mercedes has still covered more kilometers than any other team except Ferrari in Formula 1 this season – 5215 out of a possible 5408 km.

At the bottom of this ranking is Aston Martin, having completed 3753 km, with only eight successful finishes out of 18 possible for both cars. However, statistics show seven out of 12 after the April break, demonstrating much-needed early progress with their problematic Honda power unit.
