Toto Wolff Sends Clear Message to George Russell Regarding His Formula 1 Misfortunes
Toto Wolff has urged George Russell to continue to "make his own luck" following his second-place finish at the British Grand Prix.
The 28-year-old driver navigated a challenging weekend at Silverstone, where he lacked the outright pace of Andrea Kimi Antonelli and suffered a mid-race puncture. Despite these setbacks, he capitalized on his teammate's misfortune, Max Verstappen's crash, and Ferrari's decision to pit Lewis Hamilton under a safety car.
By securing 18 valuable points, the seven-time Formula 1 winner closed the gap to the young Italian at the top of the drivers' standings to just 25 points, having been 68 points adrift only three rounds prior. Russell had endured a string of unfortunate events early in the season, putting him at a disadvantage. However, with luck turning against Antonelli, the Briton was able to seize the opportunity.
When it was suggested to Wolff that luck might be starting to favor Russell, the Mercedes team principal took the opportunity to send a message to his drivers.
"You have to make your own luck," the 54-year-old Austrian told the media. "[At Silverstone] he just kept it in a car that he didn't feel was good, and in the end, Max had an incident. Lewis wanted to fight for the win and pitted, and I hope [Russell] gets some positive momentum from this."
However, the Austrian quickly shifted focus to the primary issue plaguing the Brackley-based team's campaign: reliability. Russell lost a probable victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, while Antonelli missed out on a second-place finish in Barcelona and a near-certain triumph at Silverstone.
"But overall, we have too many DNFs," Wolff added. "Three wins, well, one second place and two wins... For the Constructors' and Drivers' Championships, this is something we need to address, because besides having the best car and great driving, this is the predominant problem. But everyone in the factories is fully committed to solving it."
