Thomas Tuchel found himself in the firing line after England's semi-final defeat to Argentina. The Three Lions initially took a 1-0 lead but then completely surrendered the initiative to Argentina, a decision that proved costly. England seemed poised to secure the win for a long stretch, but ultimately faltered in the closing stages. A goal in the 86th minute and another deep into injury time sealed England's fate.
Tuchel's Errors
"You make Argentina much stronger than they are if you don't push further up the pitch. They have very good footballers, but no players with exceptional individual skill, apart from Messi. Instead, they sat deep in their own box and waited. That was perfect for Messi. He dropped a bit deeper and then he could play to his strengths," analyzed Ali Boussaboun.
It was widely anticipated that Thomas Tuchel would face significant criticism in England. The English tabloids were quick to deliver their verdict, and the conclusions regarding Tuchel are harsh.
'No one survives in England'
The expectation is that he will likely be sacked. "No one survives anything in England," Robert Maaskant remarked pointedly. "They had everything in their favor," Boussaboun added. "More players at bigger clubs, a better squad... I believe you have to try and force the issue. You have to grab them by the throat, and I didn't see that."
Maaskant drew an interesting comparison: "He pulled a 'Koeman'. The defensive substitutions were reminiscent of what Koeman did against Morocco," he observed. "Ali described it perfectly. England parked the bus. Even at that stage, I find it incomprehensible how England defended. For the first goal, a short corner, no one closes down the ball. Fernandez could just shoot," Maaskant said, utterly bewildered. "That's truly inexplicable."
