The Reason Behind Dončić's Spanish Recovery Injection Revealed

When players get injured at this point in the NBA season, and recovery takes four to six weeks, they often throw in the towel and focus on getting ready for next year. But the Lakers' Luka Dončić is clearly doing the opposite.

Luka Dončić has traveled to Spain for specialized treatment to accelerate his recovery from a hamstring injury, ESPN reports. The goal of this "injection treatment" is to shorten the standard recovery period, which for a Grade 2 strain typically lasts four to six weeks.

This procedure is expected to allow Dončić to return to the court as early as the first round of the playoffs. Dr. Evan Jeffries explained that the treatment likely involves advanced regenerative therapies, such as stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which are more accessible and effective in Spain than in the United States.

In Spain, more advanced processing of stem cells and PRP is permitted, which increases their effectiveness. Theoretically, recovery time could be halved.Evan Jeffries

He also added that Luka Dončić is likely utilizing additional treatment methods, including high-power laser therapy, red light therapy, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), SoftWave therapy, hyperbaric oxygenation, and cupping. While these therapies are available in the US, their application is limited by strict regulations from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

European countries, including Spain, Germany, and Switzerland, offer significantly greater flexibility in the application of such treatments. It's important to note that Dončić's decision does not violate NBA rules, as players and clubs have the right to make independent medical decisions, provided no banned substances are used.

Dončić isn't the only Los Angeles Lakers star to seek treatment outside the US. Kobe Bryant famously traveled to Germany for knee and Achilles tendon issues, while LeBron James sought medical advice abroad in 2023 for a foot injury.

Incidentally, Spain holds special significance for Dončić, as he spent part of his professional career there playing for Real Madrid from 2015 to 2018, where he made numerous contacts and friends.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently third in the Western Conference with a 50–28 record, and the team is also facing the absence of Austin Reaves, who will be sidelined for four to six weeks due to injury.
