Argentina's 3-1 victory over Switzerland in extra time marks only the third instance of such a scoreline in a World Cup quarter-final throughout the tournament's history.

The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after regular time, with the reigning world champions netting two more goals in the additional 30 minutes. Prior to this match, across 74 World Cup quarter-final encounters, only two other games had concluded with a 3-1 score. These were Italy vs. France in 1938, where the "Azzurri" emerged victorious, and Brazil vs. Switzerland in 1962, with the "Canarinha" prevailing. Interestingly, both Italy and Brazil went on to secure their second consecutive World Cup titles after these wins. These remain the only two occasions where a team has successfully defended its trophy in the tournament.

Now, Argentina will be aiming to replicate this feat, but first, they must overcome England in the semi-final, followed by the winner of the clash between France and Spain.
