When the clock strikes 8:30 PM tonight, life's everyday worries will fade away for about two hours for 20,000 passionate fans inside Belgrade Arena, and countless others worldwide who will anxiously follow every play between the black-and-whites and the greens, as if nothing else in the world matters. Before and after the final buzzer, pure emotion will take over. Before tip-off, even the toughest supporters might shed a tear—except for one man, who will undoubtedly do everything in his power to hide his feelings, if he can manage it at all...

Ten months later, Zeljko Obradovic returns to the Belgrade Arena hardwood, but once again as an opponent—if he could ever truly be a stranger to Partizan, or Partizan to him. It is neither the first time he arrives in front of the black-and-white faithful leading a rival team, nor the first time he will fight tooth and nail to secure a win, but it is the first time he returns in circumstances quite like this...

From his return after 30 years to that emotional embrace with Dusko Vujosevic at "Pionir" in 2008 when Partizan eliminated Obradovic's powerhouse Panathinaikos side featuring Mike Batiste, Sarunas Jasikevicius, and Dimitris Diamantidis, to the unprecedented celebrations following the Paris victory—every memorable milestone pale slightly compared to this moment. Tonight promises a display of respect, love, and gratitude on an unmatched scale, sending the loudest and clearest message possible: Welcome back, this is your home, and you will always belong here.

Applause in Store for Peñarroya as Well

It will make for an extraordinary atmosphere. Thunderous applause will undoubtedly greet Partizan's current head coach, Joan Peñarroya, ensuring he feels the full backing of the home crowd. Naturally, though, the raw emotion directed toward the visiting coach will be on a completely different level.
Some might view it as paradoxical. The Spanish tactician stepped in last season during a chaotic spell, patched up the roster, rebuilt the squad over the summer within realistic boundaries, and guided them to a 3-0 start—yet the ovation for the visiting legend will be louder. But that is Partizan, driven by unique emotions only their fans truly understand. For his part, Peñarroya insists it does not bother him in the slightest.

"This isn't a case of loving one coach and hating the other. I am delighted with our fans and I understand them completely; I know what the scene before the game will look like tomorrow. They will show huge respect and support for Zeljko, but once the match begins, I have no doubt they will be firmly behind Partizan." — Joan Peñarroya

Zeljko Obradovic noted that the supporters in the stands will simply react however their hearts guide them.

"First and foremost, I expect a great basketball game. Partizan's fans will react exactly how they feel, and there is nothing I can do about that." — Zeljko Obradovic

Pre-Season Favorites vs. Underdogs Defying Expectations

Both coaches experienced vastly different offseasons. Obradovic simply pointed to the targets he wanted from Athens with no expense spared, quickly assembling an elite roster dressed in green. On paper, he built arguably the most formidable team in the EuroLeague, already showing enviable chemistry, clinical execution, and sheer physical dominance despite not yet operating at full strength.

That superiority on paper has translated seamlessly to the court, with Obradovic's side navigating the opening four rounds unscathed, overcoming injury concerns along the way. Moustapha Fall, Juancho Hernangomez, and Nigel Hayes-Davis are already firing, with star player Kendrick Nunn expected to feature soon.

Even while awaiting full fitness across the roster, Panathinaikos has flexed its muscles alongside the likes of Hayes-Davis, Sylvain Francisco, Mathias Lessort, Guerschon Yabusele, and the versatile Isaac Bonga. The Greens boast the league's second-best offense and second-best defense through four games, sweeping aside Paris, ASVEL, and Fenerbahce to remain undefeated.

Crucially for this matchup, tonight marks Panathinaikos's first away fixture of the EuroLeague season, having enjoyed home-court advantage at the OAKA in the first four rounds.

On the opposite side, Peñarroya's summer unfolded in stark contrast. Working closely with his staff, he assembled a roster dictated by feasibility and budgetary limits—a blueprint initially written off by critics. Without headline megastars, the black-and-whites opened the season 3-0 before moving to 3-1. EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, Paris, and Bayern Munich all fell to the Serbian side, with their only stumble coming against Real Madrid. How have they done it? By forging a cohesive unit of relentless battlers.

Partizan is a team that thrives on sheer desire and energy, both of which will be on full display tonight. Everything starts with their defense, which will be essential to containing the Athenians and igniting fast breaks.

Heading into the clash, team captain Vanja Marinkovic and Derek Willis remain sidelined.

Peñarroya Labels Visitors Europe's Best

As far as head coach Peñarroya is concerned, Belgrade is hosting the top team on the continent.

"First off, this will be an extremely demanding game for us because Panathinaikos has dominated the opening four rounds, effectively putting games to bed in the first quarter. I know this will be a special occasion given the atmosphere and everyone attending. I have absolute faith that the fans will give us the incredible backing they always provide... The match itself is what matters most. We are facing the best team in the EuroLeague, and we must deliver our finest performance to come away with the win. We need immense support from our crowd." — Joan Peñarroya

Obradovic Fully Aware of the Challenge

The visiting tactician believes defensive execution will be the deciding factor.

"I expect a very competitive game. Partizan has started the season exceptionally well, and we must prepare ourselves to deliver our best possible performance on the court. Personally, I know the arena's atmosphere intimately, and the players are well aware of it too. The support Partizan receives from the stands is truly remarkable, so seeing how we respond in our first road game of the season will be vital. Everything starts on the defensive end. They have the flexibility to deploy various lineups, which makes it crucial for us to perform at our absolute highest standard." — Zeljko Obradovic
