Tensions flared in the French locker room. A heated argument erupted during the World Cup semi-final, sparked by a star player's words
While many considered France the favorites, Spain's footballers delivered a superb performance, effectively neutralizing their opponent's biggest attacking threats. Luis de la Fuente's squad struck twice, first with Mikel Oyarzabal converting a penalty, followed by Pedro Porro finding the net in the second half.
Locker Room Conflict
L'Equipe journalists later revealed what transpired in the locker room during halftime of Tuesday's match. At that point, Didier Deschamps' men were only down by a single goal, keeping their hopes of progression alive. However, a comment from Ousmane Dembélé sparked a heated exchange among the players.
"The French forward, attempting to galvanize the team, spoke up in the locker room during the halftime break. The 2025 Ballon d'Or winner commented on the French team's pressing, explaining that he found it poorly coordinated.
His speech angered some teammates, who felt that Dembélé only became agitated when he himself was struggling, and not under other circumstances," the French journalists wrote in their article.
Even in the second half, the French failed to break through their opponent's defense, with players like Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, and the aforementioned Dembélé often appearing resigned. The reigning World Cup runners-up are now left to battle for third place, where they will face England on Saturday.
