Tambuwal promises to give Sokoto prisons structural face lift
The governor made the pledge in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) for the Prisons Command in Sokoto state, Mr Bello Faruk and made available to the newsmen in Sokoto on Friday.
Faruk quoted Tambuwal as having made the pledge when the Assistant Comptroller-General (ACG) of prisons, in charge of the zone, Mr Ifeanyi Isaiah visited him in Sokoto.
He said Tambuwal also promised to construct wall fence, new entrance gate and install security bar wires at Sokoto Central Prisons, situated in the state capital.
The governor also pledged to set up committee to go round and assess the condition of prisons inmates and advise the state government on ways to handle prisons authority’s request on inmates serving life sentences.
The Isaiah earlier told the governor that he was in Sokoto on quarterly inspection visit to prisons formations in the state.
The ACG said the visit accorded him opportunity to brief the governor on the challenges of the formations, most especially the parameter wall fence and gate of Sokoto Central Prisons.
The ACG urged Tambuwal to look into possibility of commuting the life sentences of inmates to lesser terms for them to have sense of belonging and reduce tension arising from incarceration.
The ACG was accompanied, during the visit, by the Controller of Prisons, Sokoto state command, Mr Sabo Chafe, his deputy, Mrs Ummu Almustapha and other senior officers of the command.
