Global news agencies had already reported on Sunday that officials from City and Barcelona had reached an agreement on Rodri's transfer. The eight-time English champions had previously rejected two initial offers from the Catalans but ultimately did not impede the transaction, greenlighting Rodri's departure. He arrived in Barcelona on Monday.

A day later, he underwent his medical examination at the club and subsequently sealed his move to Camp Nou, signing a contract until June 2030. At his new club, he will wear his preferred number 16 jersey, which was relinquished by Fermin Lopez, who will now wear number seven.

The experienced midfielder described the opportunity to wear the Barcelona jersey as a dream come true. "I am very happy to be here. It has been a very intense few days, but I am pleased that everything has been resolved. For me, playing for Barcelona is a dream," he stated upon his arrival.

The captain of the Spanish national team helped his country secure their second World Cup title last month and was awarded the Golden Ball for the best player of the 2026 World Cup. Two years prior, he also triumphed with the national team at the 2024 European Championship in Germany. In Barcelona, he will reunite with national teammates Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, and Pedri.

Rodri joined Manchester City in 2019 from Atletico Madrid. In 2023, he scored the winning goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan, and a year later, he won the Ballon d'Or for the world's best footballer. The former Villarreal and Atletico Madrid player made 33 appearances for City across all competitions last season, scoring two goals.

With the Manchester club, he won four Premier League titles in total, playing 298 competitive matches, scoring 28 goals and providing 32 assists. He still had one year remaining on his contract with City.
