The fifth seed was in devastating form against Joao Sousa and managed to avoid a sixth opening-round exit by recording a 6-3 6-4 6-3 win.

However, Wimbledon is the only grand slam in which the Swiss has not reached the quarter-finals and his match with Lu Yen-Hsun will be his first second round match since 2011.

Wawrinka, the Australian Open champion, remains optimistic he can do well at the grass-court event despite admitting he has suffered with nerves in the past.

"That's why (nerves) I had problems in the past," he said. "In the first round you can be a little bit tight, a little bit nervous.

"On that surface (grass), it's really tough to get through. You have to be ready from the first match.

"The pressure is always there. I know that I can do some damage here, but I need to be focused for the next one."

Lu set-up a first meeting with the world number three by coming through a five-set encounter with Aleksandr Nedovyesov, eventually winning 6-4 4-6 6-4 1-6 6-1.
