Muscle discomfort felt during Greece's match against Germany led to Georgios Vagiannidis being released from international duty, returning to Sporting's Academy to begin his recovery program.

According to information gathered by A BOLA, the right-back has already been assessed by the Lions' medical staff, with worst-case scenarios ruled out. There is, therefore, a realistic chance the number 13 could recover in time for the clash against SC Braga at the Pedreira on October 9.
The 25-year-old was substituted at half-time in Ivan Jovanovic's side's 1-0 win over the Germans, having previously played the full 90 minutes against Serbia.

Should the Greek international's recovery be confirmed, Rui Borges could reinstate his original plan: deploying Vagiannidis on the right flank and shifting Iván Fresneda over to the left. This solution would allow Maxi Araújo to be rested after returning to Lisbon alongside compatriot Rodrigo Zalazar following an exhausting journey of over 42,000 kilometres on Uruguay's Asian tour (taking in Japan, South Korea, and India). The left-footed winger has logged heavy minutes, remaining a cornerstone of the South American national team despite the coaching change from Marcelo Bielsa to former star Diego Forlán.

These combined factors demand careful workload management to minimize the risk of muscular injuries that could sideline a pivotal figure like Maxi Araújo.

That is precisely Rui Borges' priority, particularly as Sporting face a demanding run of eight matches before the mid-November international break once club football resumes—with Champions League action in the mix.

As for Vagiannidis, the defender signed from Panathinaikos had been linked with a summer departure but ultimately earned a vote of confidence from Sporting's hierarchy. The full-back ended up starting the season on the right due to Fresneda's lack of match fitness while recovering from a pelvic injury suffered late last season.
Now, the path is clear once again for both full-backs to feature in the same starting eleven—a tactical option the manager has tested on previous occasions.
