Sunday's 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in New York is set to make at least two historical precedents.

For the first time in a World Cup final, the reigning European champions (Spain) will face the current South American champions (Argentina). Interestingly, their scheduled match in Qatar for the 'Finalissima' trophy in late March was canceled due to the conflict in the Middle East.

Furthermore, 'La Albiceleste' holds the number one spot in the FIFA world rankings, while 'La Furia Roja' is ranked second. This marks the only occasion since the FIFA rankings were introduced in 1992 that the top two teams have both reached the World Cup final.

Additionally, Argentina has become the sixth reigning world champion to reach a second consecutive tournament final. 'La Albiceleste' previously achieved this in 1990. Brazil also reached the final twice while defending their title, in 1962 and 1998. Italy (1938) and France (2022) have each accomplished this feat once. However, only in two instances has the champion successfully defended their title – the 'Azzurri' in 1938 and the 'Seleção' in 1962.
