Luis de la Fuente is set to remain at the helm of the Spanish national team until 2030. The news was confirmed by Rafael Lozano, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), during the World Football Summit. The coach's current contract was due to expire after Euro 2028, but it has now been extended by an additional two years. Naturally, the new agreement also revises his financial terms, acknowledging his exceptional sporting achievements and positioning him as one of the highest-paid national team coaches.

The previous agreement with the federation dated back to January 2025. The idea of extending the collaboration and rewarding the coach's successes with a contract befitting his status has long been in the plans of both Lozano and De la Fuente himself. Within the federation, there is a strong belief that what works should not be changed.

Following the World Cup triumph, both parties agreed to finalize negotiations after the summer. Reaching an agreement proved straightforward and is now a reality. The chosen end date for the new contract, 2030, also holds significance, as Spain will co-host the World Cup that year.

The news of his contract renewal comes two days before he is set to announce his first squad for the Nations League. The team will convene on September 22 to play four matches: England vs. Spain on September 26 at Wembley; Spain vs. Croatia on September 29 at the Sánchez-Pizjuán in Seville; Spain vs. Czech Republic on October 3 at the Carlos Tartiere in Oviedo; and Croatia vs. Spain on October 6 at Poljud Stadium in Split.

In less than four years, De la Fuente has become the most decorated coach in the history of Spanish football: a World Champion, much like one of his idols Vicente del Bosque; a European Champion, placing him alongside Aragones, Villalonga, and Del Bosque himself; and a Nations League trophy winner, which started it all. Furthermore, he joins an elite group, including Del Bosque and Helmut Schön – the only coaches before him to have won both a World Cup and a European Championship.

Prior to this, De la Fuente already had a successful career within the federation's youth structures. He became a European Champion with the U19 team in 2015 and the U21 team in 2019, won the Mediterranean Games in 2018, and secured a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
