That’s not bad for a glowing career which has provided Nigeria with a lot of highs and iconic moments. The singer never walked the country as an A-List artiste. Neither at any point has he laid claim to being the best artiste to grace Nigeria and Africa. That’s for 2face Idibia, Psquare, Wizkid, and Davido to fight about. What Sultan achieved was staying relevant on the B-List category, and getting rewarded for his craft, and creating songs which contained conscious messages, but made acceptable with pop sounds.
Some his greatest hits include ‘Bush meat’, ‘Mathematics’, ‘Motherland’, ‘King of my country’, and many more. His discography reads below.
2001- “Kpseeeeeeew”
2004 – “Textbook”
2007 – “Naija 007”
2008 – “SS4”
2010 – “Back to The future”
2012 – “Me, My Mouth and Eye”
Sound Sultan’s new album will be making an entrance at a time when the singer’s pop relevance is in dire need of a shot in the arm. The singer’s singles have failed to peak, with very limited acceptance given to them. Within the past 6 months the singer has released videos for singles ‘Everything is everything’, ‘Monsura’, ‘Oba lola’, and the Trap-isnpired ‘Kuku no worry’. None of them have made the progress to being a hit.
Why this is happening can be pinned down to a number of reasons. But the most apt will be the increased competition, which has influenced the singer to tweak his composition towards the radio-friendly sounds. Those sounds have not done him any good. Pop music’s evolution comes with a certain mass interest-migration to the younger acts. The system is rigged against the younger guys, with the cycle of interest favouring them. Songs from Ycee, Falz and Reekado banks are more likely to get mass attention.
However, this has not stopped the singer from putting together his album. Should this be his last hoorah in the LP department?
Sound Sultan has been active in the game for over a decade, extending his repertoire of skills to acting, movie production, physical merchandise, sports entrepreneurship (he owns Basketball team Lagos Islanders), record label management and more. Music which was the foundation of his successes have grown to play a limited role. He is a fulfilled man, having accomplished all that he has set out to do, including his boyish dreams of Basketball involvement.
