Facebook and its many security faults
The rate at which your daily life revolves round Facebook is alarming and that huge social dependency built on Facebook has raised the stakes really high.
Pay close attention to the issues I am about to point out to you. And if you don’t use Facebook, please stop reading.
1. Facebook’s security is laughable.
‘The convenient’ isn’t always the best, is it? We often fall for the temptation to tick the box ‘remember this password’ when logging into websites because it ‘saves time’.
Well, on Facebook it does more. There’s even a Firefox add-on which will allow you to hijack the Facebook login details of anyone using the same public WIFI as you.
That means your passwords are not reliable to keep you safe. Do not stay online on any browser…always log out each time you want to close your browser. This would save you from giving out your login details unknowingly.
2. Stalking is incredibly easy.
People can have all the details of your life and activities without your permission, anytime they want it. All that is needed is to become a committed visitor to your timeline and they’ll know every single move you make.
So when next you have someone stalking you, you can only be truly free from them when you block them on Facebook. Meanwhile, not every life activity of yours should be Facebook-bound!
3. Facebook is based on User Generated Content (UGC).
This means all that is seen on Facebook are posts by users! And this makes the website full of viruses. Lots of people will post a link that says something like, ‘click here to see a picture’, but then when you click there, it’s not a picture; it’s a virus.
And Facebook has no known facility for protecting you from this problem. So before you click on a link on any post, update or comment on Facebook, be sure you trust the user sharing it.
4. Like Google and Yahoo, Facebook’s primary source of income is advertisements.
But Unlike Google and Yahoo, Facebook lacks buoyant standards for who advertises with them. Most of the advertisements on Facebook are scams, pyramid schemes, and a few of them are even malware.
In fact, most of the banners you click on have exposed you to malware without you knowing that a hacker somewhere already has a backdoor into your PC; a backdoor you created for him by clicking on an advert like ‘Learn how you can make more money online’.
Scary, isn’t it? A good antivirus with Internet security might be of help here. USB Trojans aren’t your only enemies.
5. Facebook chat is what you should never use if you do any sensitive chat.
I mean if you send nude pictures or any private content using Facebook chat, you might just find them on the internet soon enough.
So try alternative chat avenues if you would be transmitting such material.
6. Finally, you should know that Facebook keeps track of all the websites you visit, as long as you are logged into Facebook on that browser. In fact, this company is the biggest consumer stalking brand I know.
Your entire online patterns are being monitored, and the depth of detail will amaze you. So in case you want to visit any questionable website…make sure you log out of Facebook first.
Lest I forget, Facebook changes their privacy policy so often without notifying you! So be sure to check it often too, to make sure your privacy settings are the way you want them to be.
Finally, keep your nudes away from anything Facebook…..Whatsapp inclusive…sorry ehn, manage!
