Despite Marc Marquez's remarkable achievements in MotoGP, Sepang remains one of the circuits where he has rarely stood on the top step of the podium.
The Spaniard has just two Malaysian GP victories to his name, earned in 2014 and 2018 with Honda. This weekend's race offers him an opportunity to break an eight-year wait for a new triumph and secure his first victory here with Ducati near Kuala Lumpur.
His record at Sepang also includes two second-place finishes, in 2013 and 2019. That amounts to four podiums in ten starts, giving him a win rate of just 20%. Across his last three main race appearances at the Malaysian circuit, he crossed the line seventh in 2022, 13th in 2023, and 12th in 2024.
The contrast with his strongest venues is striking. At Germany's Sachsenring (pictured below), Marquez has taken ten wins from 11 MotoGP starts, while at MotorLand Aragon he has triumphed eight times in 12 attempts. Circuit of the Americas in Austin and Misano follow, where the Spaniard has celebrated seven victories across 12 and 14 starts, respectively.
Interestingly, Marquez also holds a 100% win record at three tracks: three wins from three starts at Indianapolis, two out of two at Balaton Park, and one from his sole outing at Laguna Seca. Against that backdrop, Sepang presents a very different challenge for the No. 93 rider.
The Malaysian venue sits alongside the Red Bull Ring (1/10), Silverstone (1/11), Ricardo Tormo (2/9), Catalunya (2/12), Lusail (2/11), and Mugello (2/13) among the least fruitful tracks for the seven-time world champion. None of these, however, compare to Portimao, Mandalika, Buddh, and Ayrton Senna, where Marquez has yet to record a win. He has four starts apiece at Portimao and Mandalika, and one start each at the other two tracks.
