The attention of PDP Generation Next, a coalition of young politicians and Nigerian youths in the People’s Democratic Party has been drawn to a statement released by the Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth & Advancement (YIAGA). In their statement, the body expressed “its disappointment with Senator Saraki for usurping a platform designed for young aspirants to dialogue with party leadership”
This statement, which we consider unfortunate, shows clearly that the body considers itself the authority on where political candidates should make their ambitions known. The said event was which was financed by the PDP was a meeting between PDP political aspirants and the party’s leadership. To then say the event was usurped by the party is not only unfortunate, but shows that YIAGA is allowing itself to be used for political motives against the PDP.
To remotely suggest that the National Leader of the PDP, Dr Bukola Saraki took advantage of any movement or group of people is unfair, given the fact that the Senate President withholds the right to choose any platform he so desires to declare his decision.
We consider the #NotTooYoungToRun movement as one which is much-needed if Nigerian youths are to be given a chance to bring fresh ideas to politics and governance in Nigeria and consider any attacks on our party, its leadership or its youth as an attack on the very ideals of the movement.
The non-partisanship of the #NotTooYoungToRun movement is respected by all young Nigerians irrespective of their political leanings and we view any attempts to use it to stifle the voice of any political party or candidate as ill-advised.
