Reigning world champion Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, secured second place, just 0.041 seconds behind, with Charles Leclerc of Ferrari taking third, 0.055 seconds off the pace.

Oscar Piastri, in the other McLaren, was the closest challenger to the leader, finishing fourth, 0.099 seconds adrift.

Rounding out the top six were championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli for Mercedes and Max Verstappen representing Red Bull.

The qualifying session proved disappointing for Lewis Hamilton, also with Ferrari, who could only manage seventh after losing pace towards the very end of the session.
