England's second all-time leading scorer, Wayne Rooney, believes Thomas Tuchel should remain as the national team manager, unless the Football Association can secure Pep Guardiola for the role.
The English squad failed to reach their second World Cup final, losing to Argentina in the semi-finals, and Tuchel faced widespread criticism for his decisions during the match. However, the Press Association has learned that the German tactician retains the support of key figures within the FA, which extended his contract until 2028 in February. Former national team captain Rooney thinks Tuchel should stay, unless former Manchester City manager Guardiola, with whom the governing body has previously held discussions, accepts the job.
“I don't see anyone else at the moment, unless it's Pep Guardiola. If Pep is available, then maybe – go and get him. He's a top-class manager. What top coaches do is learn from their mistakes, improve, and get better. If we sack Tuchel, what coaches are we going to bring in? I don't think there's anyone as good as Thomas Tuchel, apart from Guardiola. But the most important thing for me is that he lacks World Cup experience. It was exactly the same with Fabio Capello. The World Cup is different, and you need to feel that environment, and now he has felt it,” the legendary striker stated on “The Wayne Rooney Show.”
