The classic Hollywood movie '' has inspired a jail break at the Clinton Correctional Facility.
Richard Matt, 49, and David Sweat, 35 got their hands on power tools and drilled their way out of the maximum security prison within a few days.
The security authorities do not know how they got their hands on the tools. Matt and Sweat used dummies on their beds to make it look they were asleep while they made their escape.
It is believed that they escaped on late Friday or early Saturday, and came out through a manhole on the other side of the prison's walls.
"When you look at how the operation was done, it was extraordinary" said New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
The escape of the duo is the first escape to occur at the prison. Matt was serving a 25 years to life sentence for killing two men in 1997. His accomplice Sweat was serving a life sentence for fatally shooting a deputy sheriff thirteen years ago.
