In the footage obtained by the UK Sun,  the 20-year-old player is seen sucking on an orange balloon and then laughing before asking a pal to give him another hit.

The camera later pans back to him unconscious.

Sterling who scored in Liverpool's Monday night's 2-0 victory over Newcastle will reportedly face a club investigation over why he was inhaling nitrous oxide which is also known as ‘hippy crack’.

Nitrous oxide starves the brain of oxygen and makes users feel light-headed and dizzy.

Liverpool revealed that they have started an investigation over the case which they say will be treated 'internally'.

"We are aware of the story and intend to speak to the player. Any subsequent action will be taken internally," a Liverpool spokesman is quoted to say by the Daily Mail.

Commenting on the video, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said "I will do. He’s a young kid who has been in the spotlight now so he knows the demands of being a top class professional — it’s not just on the field it’s off the field, but I will speak with him on it and we’ll move on."

Sterling is however not the first English player to have been caught dragging the laughing gas.

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker was pictured inhaling a balloon in 2013, while last year Saido Berahino was pictured doing it at the wheel of his Range Rover.
