Ghana's head coach, Carlos Queiroz, attributed his team's 1-0 defeat to Colombia, which eliminated them from the World Cup in the Round of 16, to a lack of experience and the players' inability to remain calm under pressure. Jhon Arias scored the sole goal for the South Americans in the 14th minute.
"I quickly sensed that some of our players were afraid. They weren't composed, calm, or focused when put under pressure. This is a very young team. We need more experience; we need time for some players to gain what we call maturity. When you play a competition of this caliber, you cannot rely solely on the enthusiasm of youth," explained the 73-year-old Portuguese coach.
Queiroz conceded that Colombia was the superior team in the match and deserved to advance. "The goal came too early for us... It took us some time to adapt and recover from that shift, and the goal came at the very moment we were trying to readjust our game," he stated. The Ghana coach added that his team improved in the second half but never truly controlled the match.
