Tennis star to represent Nigeria at the Liebherr 2018 Men’s World Cup

Despite losing at the Africa Cup, Quadri Aruna will fly Nigeria's flag at the Liebherr 2018 Men’s World Cup.

Quadri received the invitation to the tournament by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Paris, France from Friday, October 19 to Sunday, 21 October 2018.

Quadri initially did not qualify for the tournament after he suffered a 3-4 loss to Egypt’s Omar Assar at the 2018 Top 16 Africa Cup held in Kenya.

Quadri worked hard to earn his invitation as he is now ranked the 20th best Table Tennis player in the world.

His invitation was sent to him by Head of World Cup and ITTF Challenge Zena Sim.

The invitation read, “On behalf of the ITTF, we would like to invite Quadri Aruna to participate in the Liebherr 2018 Men’s World Cup in Paris from 19-21 Oct.

“Quadri Aruna qualified based on his status as 2018 Africa Cup 2nd place (after taking the July World Ranking (WR) in consideration).”

He took to his official Instagram account to express his delight at the invitation with a message which said, “Very happy and excited that I will play again in World Cup later this year in October.”

He will compete at the tournament alongside world stars such as Egypt’s Omar Assar, South Korea’s LEE Sangsu and Jeong Sangeun  Chinese duo of Ma Long and Fan Zhendong, Japan’s Niwa Koki and Harimoto Tomokazu; United States’ Khanak Jha,  Belarus’ Vladimir Samsonov Germany’s Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov.

Other contestants are Brazil’s Hugo Calderano and Gustavo Tsuboi; France’s Simon Gauzy and Lebesson Emmanuel; Sweden’s Karlsson Mattias; Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting; Denmark’s Jonathan Groth and Australia’s HU Heming.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games has started preparations for the tournament.
