On March 23, 2016, the Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, had a lot to say about the lack of growth and collapse of Nigeria's automotive industry.

During a visit from the Managing Director of Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria (PAN), Mr. Ibrahim Boyi, the minister blamed the sad state of affairs on the lack of proper research and development.

“If you look at what happened in 1980s and 1990s, it is very clear to us that if our automobile industry had done research and developmental work for a period of time, we would have been strong enough to succeed,” he said.

Everyone agreed with Onu.

Despite the apparent lack of research and development, Nigeria's automotive industry seems to be doing a lot better, in recent times.

Recently, Toyota has unveiled a #MadeinNigeria Hiace, while Dana Motors has revealed plans to use 90% local materials for it's cars.

All of these and more prove that Nigeria is headed in the right direction.
