Vanessa hurried to the door of Adora’s office. As she usually did every time before she entered the office, she inhaled deeply and prepared for the worst. When she was ready, she opened the door and peered in.

She could not quite hide the fear in her voice

Adora gave her a passive glance and continued with the sketch sorting on her desk.

Vanessa came in a little more and then shut the door behind her

she said simply, still without giving Vanessa another look. Vanessa sat down quietly and watched Adora as she worked. Damn! This woman was classy! Even the way she held a common pencil was pure class. Vanessa took in her features as she made a call. Adora was beautiful! She could not help but admit that. She had not only heard stories of the number and caliber of suitors that chased after her boss, she had seen with her own eyes.

More than once, Adora had asked her to shut down calls from the most eligible men… Men that Vanessa would have given an arm to spend just a night with. Men fought over her boss and she saw how Adora reveled in that. She had never seen them together but she had heard that even the Famous Lanre Esan was on Adora’s case too.

Adora’s words snapped her back to life. she quickly adjusted her gaze and concentration as she waited to hear what her boss needed from her.

The words were like bullets fired at Vanessa. She stared dumbly for a few moments before starting to process what her boss had just said. Immediately a torrent of emotions ran through her. In one split second she was exited and devastated. Excited that she would finally be rid of her cold boss yet devastated because her career would be over.

Vanessa stammered out the golden question

Adora stared calmly at Vanessa

The sudden relief and equal dread on Vanessa’s face was unmistakable.

Adora stared coolly into her eyes for a few minutes before getting up and walking slowly to stand behind the chair Vanessa sat in.

Vanessa froze in her seat. It wasn’t only Adora’s close proximity to her that rendered her catatonic but also the words her boss had just spoken. Vanessa turned slightly to look up at her boss and when she saw Adora’s face, ice cold chills ran unchecked up and down her spine.

Adora stood behind, hands clasped in front of her, wearing the softest sweetest smile ever seen.

Adora never smiled at her. This was more than enough to unnerve her but that was not the source of the chills.

Her eyes. They were cold and disconnected from the smile. Dead.

Vanessa stared into them for a few seconds and almost screamed as realization dawned on her. She knew. Adora knew.
