Arsenal confirmed that they will finish below fierce North London rivals Tottenham for the first time in 22 years.
In that defeat, Arsenal were completely outplayed, outfought and outthought in a game that could start the shift of power in North London.
The man at the centre of these all is Arsene Wenger, whose reluctance to leave Arsenal has become comical. Comical in the sense that rival fans now want him to stay. Tottenham fans danced, sang and waved their arms in celebrations at the game on Sunday.
“Arsene Wenger, we want you to stay,” they sang.
If this is not comical and shameful, then I don’t know what these words mean anymore. Fans of Arsenal’s most hated rivals, want him to stay.
Wenger staying beyond this point is downright ridiculous. He has failed to deliver the Premier League since 2004, can’t win the Champions League despite years of consecutive participations.
Now the Champions League he takes so much pride in qualifying for every season is gone, Tottenham have now finished above him. What else does he have?
The only thing is pride, which could work both ways for him. Leave now with it intact or stay to prove everyone wrong.
Chelsea
He celebrated like the league was already won but with Tottenham beating Arsenal later to cut Chelsea’s lead to four points, the fight is still on.
Conte however still have reasons to celebrate the way he did, the title won or not. This was Everton at Goodison Park, where they had only lost a league game all season. With just a four-point lead prior the kick-off, Conte would have been mad anxious.
But the way Chelsea swept away Everton would have surprised him a bit.
The Premier League was supposed to be tougher than this for Conte. With both Manchester clubs, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal are competing, this was his toughest challenge yet.
At Juventus, he walked to the title every season, so the Italian expected more from the Premier League.
Not to say that Chelsea have not worked hard for where they are, but this has been relatively easy for them and for Conte, that deserves a wild celebration.
Manchester United
You have to feel a little sympathy for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. Came into a club that was on the verge of losing their identity after three miserable seasons, needed a little time to make his team play the way he wants, seems to have gotten it and then injuries came and ruined it all.
That’s the story of Manchester United this season. Their 1-1 draw at home to Swansea means a top-four finish is gone for now, but Mourinho’s is on course to have a successful first season at United.
With a League Cup title already won, Mourinho and Manchester United are gunning for Europa League glory which will give them automatic qualification for the Champions League.
If Mourinho wins the Europa League title this season, that would make his first season a success.
Injuries have curtailed his squad so far this season, but he is sure going to get them better for next.
