United had been actively seeking midfield reinforcements following Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's long-term injury. According to bbc.com, Michael Carrick's side had targeted Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, but both opted for moves to Manchester City and Tottenham, respectively.

The twenty-time English champions are also without Kobbie Mainoo at the start of pre-season training, as he is currently competing with the national team at the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
