Jorge Fonseca and Diogo Chantre, both competing in the -100 kg category, were eliminated this Sunday in the repechage rounds of the European Open in Prague, Czech Republic, thus missing out on the opportunity to contend for bronze medals.
The two Portuguese judokas ultimately fell to opponents from Uzbekistan. Jorge Fonseca was defeated by Mukhammadali Zoirov, while Diogo Chantre was bested by Mirjalol Ormuminov.
Jorge Fonseca, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, began his campaign with victories over Slovakia's Martin Turansky and the Netherlands' Lars Vissers, before being knocked out in the quarter-finals by Ukraine's Yaroslav Davydchuk.
Meanwhile, Diogo Chantre defeated Ukraine's Zaur Duniamaliiev and Germany's Ilias Kuester, but ultimately lost in the quarter-finals to Colombia's Francisco Balanta.
Diogo Brites (+100 kg) also saw action but was eliminated in his second bout by Kazakhstan's Galymzhan Krikbay, following an initial win against Czech Republic's Jan Masek.
The sole Portuguese woman in action this Sunday, Ana Agulhas (-57 kg), did not advance beyond the second round, where she lost to Germany's Jana Ziegler after overcoming Kazakhstan's Inkar Tulepbergenova.
Despite these results, the Portuguese delegation returns from Prague with two medals: gold secured by Joana Crisóstomo in the -63 kg category and bronze achieved by Olympian Rochele Nunes in the +78 kg category.
