Paris Saint-Germain announced on Monday that midfielder Vitinha is suffering from an "inflammation in his right heel." The injury resulted from an unfortunate fall in the 39th minute of Sunday's match against Lyon, a game that ultimately went in favor of Paulo Fonseca's side.
The club further stated that "Vitinha will remain under medical observation for the next few days" and that "a new assessment will be conducted at the end of the week." Updates on the Portuguese midfielder's progress are expected at that time.
Vitinha's injury has caused concern among both PSG and the Portuguese national team, especially with the World Cup set to kick off in less than two months, on June 11th. Before that, PSG must focus on their Ligue 1 campaign and the Champions League, where they are scheduled to face Bayern in the semi-finals on April 28th and May 6th.
What offered some reassurance, at least to a degree, for fans of both teams and the FC Porto academy product, was the fact that he was able to walk off the pitch under his own power after the injury, despite clearly being in pain.
Vitinha has been a high-impact player this season, featuring almost constantly for both his club and Portugal. He has made a total of 53 appearances this campaign, contributing seven goals and 10 assists.
