Tad Jean believes he ranks among the top three welterweights in the UFC.
Jean (12-0) claimed the Professional Fighters League (PFL) welterweight title after defeating Ernesto Rodriguez via third-round technical knockout. Despite taking the fight on just 48 hours' notice, Rodriguez presented a significant challenge to Jean, even dropping "Silverback" in the second round. However, Jean weathered the storm and rallied to finish an exhausted Rodriguez in the third frame.
While many consider UFC fighters to be the world's elite, Jean is convinced he can compete with the best in the welterweight division. According to the American, only superficial fans believe that PFL competitors are inferior to those in the UFC. The undefeated champion acknowledges that his statements will draw criticism but asserts he could also win a UFC title.
"I'm among the best. I'm in the top 3," Jean told Ariel Helwani. "I know people talk down about PFL and say, 'You're in PFL, so you're worth nothing.' The level of fighters in PFL is just as high as that of competitors in the UFC. The reason you don't understand that and don't think that way is because you're a superficial fan. You're not a true MMA enthusiast. You don't understand the sport as well as you hope or think. I'm at the top of the PFL welterweight division. I'm a champion, and there's nothing to stop me from becoming the UFC welterweight champion as well."
Jean joined the PFL in 2023, having only had four professional bouts prior. The 28-year-old American won the 2025 PFL welterweight tournament, securing significant victories over Muhammad Berhamov, Jason Jackson, and Logan Storley.
Meanwhile, the UFC welterweight title will be contested at UFC 330 on August 15th at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Islam Makhachev will make his first defense of the 170-pound belt against Ireland's Ian Garry.
