Pedro Acosta has taken full responsibility for the crash that cost him a certain victory in Saturday's sprint race in Austria.
The KTM rider held a comfortable lead when he entered the chicane at Turn 2 at an impossibly high speed, three laps from the end of the race, leading to his fall. After retiring from the event, the 22-year-old explained that he was checking information on his dashboard and consequently missed his braking point.
“I was riding with a very good feeling, the pace was really strong. I was just checking the remaining laps on the dashboard to see how I was [in terms of fuel]. I messed it up, that’s it. I missed my braking point. It was the wrong moment to check what you wanted to check. Three laps to go, three seconds lead. Yes, it was a complete mess from my side,” Acosta commented to the media after the sprint. “Also, that was the moment when I eased off slightly, not to take any risks… Because of that, I lost a bit of concentration. Tomorrow, if I’m in the same position, I definitely won’t be easing off,” the KTM rider added.
However, Acosta adopted a different stance shortly after when asked what might change in his approach for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix.
“Nothing. I mean, I have nothing to lose. Also, [at the moment] I’m showing more speed, with more consistent good results. So tomorrow the approach is the same,” the Spaniard commented.
Acosta is still chasing his maiden long-race victory in MotoGP, as his time with KTM is drawing to a close. He is set to leave the Austrian manufacturer to join the factory Ducati team at the end of this season.
