2 Dead After Canadian Parliament Attack

2 people have been confirmed dead after a gunman shot a soldier near the Canadian Parliament and got access into the main building before he was killed by security personnel

A soldier guarding the War Memorial near the Canadian Parliament in Ottawahas lost his life after an attacker shot him point blank before also being gunned down by security personnel.

Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was murdered by Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a convert to Islam who was born Michael Joseph Hall in 1982.

Contrary to reports that there were multiple shooters, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has said that Zehaf-Bibeau was the lone gunman and investigations are currently ongoing into his actions and motives for same.

Watson told CNN:

"It appears there was just one shooter, and that shooter is dead," "But it has been a traumatic experience, obviously, for not only our city but the country."

Prime Minister,Stephen Harper said:

"In the days to come, we will learn more about the terrorist and any accomplices he may have had, but this week's events are a grim reminder that Canada is not immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere in the world."

"Let there be no misunderstanding: We will not be intimidated. Canada will never be intimidated."

Zehaf-Bibeau had been arrested several times for drug use before he converted to Islam.

Wednesday’s events led to a temporary lockdown of the parliament after Prime Minister Harper was taken out of the building.
